I knew absolutely nothing about Door County before setting out in an RV to experience the best of the USA. In case you’re unfamiliar like I was, Door County is that little “finger” peninsula in eastern Wisconsin that sticks out into Lake Michigan. Door County has a vibe and culture all its own, and we found it to be a thoroughly enjoyable destination! If you’re looking for the best things to do in Door County, Wisconsin, here are our four favorites:

1) Did you know that the Niagara Escarpment (the cliff over which the famous waterfall plunges) runs all the way from New York to Illinois? We got an up-close and personal view of these limestone walls hiking Eagle Trail in Peninsula State Park. No waterfall here because the water isn’t constricted and instead trickles over everywhere. Here’s my formula for a top-notch hike: unusual natural wonders, water to play in along the way, beautiful scenic vistas. Check, check, check! (And doesn’t it look like a real-life Minecraft world?)

2) Kayaking into the rock caves and jumping out to swim in the greeny-blue water of Lake Michigan was the best! If you’re going to visit Cave Point, make sure you get in the water – kayak or cliff jump – because you can’t see the really good stuff standing on the ledge above it!

3) Whoa! Watching dinner get cooked at a traditional Door County Fish Boil is an experience! Boilmaster “Torch” at The Old Post Office in Ephraim was skilled, informative, and entertaining! Their whitefish is caught a few miles away in Green Bay every other day. And the boiled fish and potatoes? Pretty good with plenty of melted butter and “table seasoning.” Plus local cherry pie for dessert! Mmm!

4) Here’s a chance to be a graffiti artist (without getting in trouble), AND a part of living history! Well over 100 years ago, sailors would mark their safe passage through “Death’s Door” and arrival in Ephraim, WI by painting their ship’s name and date on the side of the warehouse at Anderson’s Dock. Continuing this tradition is encouraged, so bring your creativity and your paints when you visit!

Whether you’re looking for an outdoor adventure, unique dining experience, or simply relaxing by the lake, you’re bound to find plenty of wonderful things to do in Door County, Wisconsin – and we wholeheartedly recommend that you do!
